“Is Sin Real?”

Is sin real? We know people sometimes do bad things. We know even good people sometimes do bad things. Is that what sin is? Is it anything we do that is bad? Is it being on Santa’s naughty list? And who determines what is bad? Is sin real? What is sin?

The definition of sin is: “An immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law.”

That definition appears to be in agreement with what God’s Word says about sin. If so, then in order for sin to be real, there would also need to be “divine laws”. Not just man-made laws, but God-made laws.

If I’m understanding this right, I might break a law of man and it is not necessarily sin, unless it is also a divine law. Such as, I’m told it has become the law of the land that I must receive a chip in my body to perform all financial transactions, and if I don’t, then I do not eat and I’m off to jail. If I refuse the chip, am I in sin?

Actually, I’m in sin if I do take the chip! (Assuming I cannot trust our government and it is not proven beyond doubt it is not the 666. Frankly, I don’t see how it could be proven beyond doubt. Our government has proven its ability and willingness to lie if it meets their agenda.)

So… sin is actually dependent upon violation of divine law, not man’s. Now the question becomes is there divine law? Which means there would also need to be a God. A being who has divine authority because frankly, He created it all, it all belongs to Him, including mankind, and He has every right to set the standards for His creation. Hhmmm.

We know man has laws. Our legal system is real and absolutely necessary, even if it is poorly executed many times. Society would be complete chaos without manmade laws. It would be survival of the strongest, or smartest. We could not even have the pleasure of driving our personal vehicles without laws. It would be a nightmare! Complete traffic jam!

We know there are physical laws, financial laws, laws of success, mathematical laws, scientific law, and etc etc etc. But is there divine law? Because if there is, then sin is REAL.

The Bible says the wages of sin is death; we die. We know we die. Anybody doubt they are going to die? My body is dying right now. I can’t stop it. And so is yours. We call it aging. You can hope man solves the cause of death before you die, but the solution is “No Sin”. Good luck.

The Bible does not say we are dying because we break man’s laws, although it might happen, but we are dying because we have broken divine laws. It also says we are made in the image of God. In some ways we are like God. And we have set up a system where if we break man’s laws we are arrested, taken by force, put on trial, and are judged! At the end of that trial by the powers that be, we receive a sentence. In some states, that sentence could even be a death sentence. This is what mankind does to itself. We copy God?

Basically, I’ve said all this to say this, if there is sin, then there must be divine law. If there is divine law, then there must be a trial and judgement. If there is a judgement, then there must be a penalty to pay and a place to pay it. And if all that be true, then there must be a God. And God’s Word says >

“For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgement, and a fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.” (Hebrews 10:26-27)

Can you imagine being on Death Row? We hear of those who have been on Death Row for years, their lives hanging in the balance, hoping for another repeal or a pardon. I can’t imagine how awful that would be. They’ve already been proven guilty and are simply stalling the sentence being carried out. One more day…one more day…one more day. But as long as that judgement is still on them, that day will come.

“Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, and counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord. And again, The Lord will judge His people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Hebrews 10:29-31)

The fact we have set up a system similar to God, I see it as evidence we are made in God’s image just like God’s Word says. And if that is true, then likely all the rest is true too. God created a world that constantly indicates God’s Word is true, if we only open our mind to understand. This world is headed towards a cashless society, no doubt. That financial method will eventually become a mark, no doubt.

If sin is not real, and God is not real, then why do we keep proving His Word true? Why would we even go down this road predicted 2,000 years ago in the Bible? Why would we not prove God’s Word to be a lie by doing it anyway but that way? Hhmmm. My personal conclusion is, God’s Word IS true. All of it. And I’m not alone in this conclusion. The evidence is overwhelming.

“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, SO THAT THEY ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE,” (Romans 1:20)

The evidence really IS overwhelming. Those of us who see it, find it so hard to understand others do not. There really are only two kinds of people in this world. Those who see and believe, and those who do not. Those who “do not”, will eventually hate those who “do”. Perhaps they already do. The Bible says it would be so. God’s Word proven true again. Imagine that.

But they say we are the haters. Because we believe in divine laws? That makes us haters? Who is going to attack who? There are none so blind as those who REFUSE to see. The evidence is overwhelming.

  1. Amen! Well said.

I like to think of “judgement” in a different way, as it relates to civil court. In the modern world we tend to perceive judgement from the perspective of a criminal being sentenced, but in the Bible people were going to court to get a favorable judgment, like we see with the persistent widow or the mother of the baby in Solomon’s tale. They are seeking restoration, justice, the righting of wrongs. That is true in the modern world too, one might go to civil court against a powerful corporation or a government because one is seeking a judgment, the righting of a wrong.

I tend to believe that is how it is for those of us in Christ. Of course we are all sinners living in a broken world, but Jesus is our judgement, He is our favorable ruling, He is our righting of wrongs, our Redeemer. We are not about to be charged and sentenced by God who acts like a criminal judge.

    1. Completely agree. This is more for the person who refuses to see that sin is real, God is real, and judgement is real. Thanks so much for taking time to check it out. I enjoy your perspective.

Interesting post to discern your statement: “The Bible says the wages of sin is death; we die.”

The religious belief that all humans are born with both a body and a soul that over time leads to deaths and judgements.

One judgment for our sins we commit in our lifetimes may lead us be judged by humans, may lead to separate our bodies from fellow humans for a period of time.

There is always be hope for the living to avoid the worse judgement for our sins is that our souls will be separated from Christ for eternity upon our bodily death,

“For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. As well their love, as their hatred and their envy, is perished long ago; neither have they any more a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun” (9:5,6 – ASV).

What we humans need to discern and understand the wisdom of beliefs that we sinners still can hope to atone to end our “wages of sin” only while both our bodies and souls are still living.

“Anyone who is among the living has hope —even a live dog is better off than a dead lion, (Ecclesiastes 9:4)

    1. Yes. If I’m understanding you right, planet earth is our place of choosing who we will serve. Either God unto life, or sin unto death. Choose life. This is our place and time of choosing, and every person does, one way or another. Thanks for stopping in! I love the live dog and dead lion thing. Really makes you think outside the normal box.

At age 69, my favorite thing to do is sharing God’s Word. Whether doing a reading, preaching, or teaching, it keeps the fire burning in my belly.
